Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Higher Education: Balancing Innovation and Human Values

With Artificial Intelligence (AI) advancing rapidly, universities and colleges wrestle with two fronts: mapping the AI frontier that drives pedagogical innovation and research advancement while, at the same time, upholding the ethical standards and codes of conduct that define their institutional values. This session outlines the current state of AI, its ramifications for higher education, and potential future trajectories. Attendees will glean insights into balancing innovation and integrity while assessing a future where AI may assume a more prominent role in public discourse.

Guest Speaker: Mustafa Akben

Mustafa Akben is an Assistant Professor of Management and Director of Artificial Intelligence Integration at Elon University, NC. His work focuses on how emerging AI technologies—particularly deep learning and generative AI—shape human cognition and behavior, and how institutions and organizations can thoughtfully integrate these advancements. By developing machine learning tools for social science research, assessing AI institutional preparedness, and exploring how AI reshapes organizational practices, he seeks to provide some insights that address the challenges of our rapidly evolving world—while also deepening our understanding of human nature in this new context.

This session is for all Program Coordinators, GEC Coordinators, and School Directors. Due to the nature of the workshop, this session will be presented face-to-face only.

This writing group aims to support faculty,  staff, and graduate student research by designating time for writing and increasing productivity through peer support and personal accountability.  Join us on Teams and plan to focus time on writing an article, book chapter, grant proposal, blog, grading or another project.  

Show Up and Write! will meet virtually every Thursday this spring from 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 pm beginning January 30, 2025 and concluding April 24, 2025. These sessions are come-and-go as needed for your schedule and do not include peer exchange. Faculty, staff and graduate students from all disciplines and ranks are welcome to attend.

The workshop will be roundtable discussions of case studies of realistic interactions between graduate mentors and students. For new faculty, this workshop will also satisfy the mentorship training requirement to receive graduate faculty status.

Lunch will be provided at the Lunch and Learn Workshops on March 18. Light snacks and refreshments will be provided for the Mentorship Training Series.

AI at USM: Insights, Challenges, and Possibilities

This spring, the USM Artificial Intelligence Taskforce, the Office of the Provost, and the Center for Faculty Development are collaborating to host a series of panels and guest speakers—both from USM and beyond—to advance discussions on the impact of artificial intelligence at USM and in higher education nationwide. 
The series will kick off with a panel discussion featuring USM faculty and students, sharing their experiences, insights, and cautions regarding the use of artificial intelligence. The session will include breakout discussions for deeper engagement among attendees.
