The Luckyday Scholars Program provides opportunities for leadership, service, and professional development through a variety of programming options.
Luckyday Freshmen
First-year scholars are required to live in Luckyday Citizenship Hall and take the Luckyday seminar course IDS 110 focusing on servant leadership. They are introduced to service and the Hattiesburg community with their seminar class in the fall semester and then begin serving independently in the spring.
Luckyday Upperclassmen
Scholars attend semester meetings throughout their time in the program. Freshmen and sophomores are expected to maintain a 2.5 GPA or higher, while juniors and seniors are expected to maintain a 2.75 GPA or higher. We know that students take on leadership roles all over campus and we encourage involvement in organizations. Scholars have options for leadership roles within the Luckyday Program as well. Students may also apply for a scholarship to study abroad.
Scholars volunteer at least 10 hours each semester in the community.
Scholars have the option of applying for a scholarship to study abroad in a program that begins after their first year at Southern Miss. It is a $2,000-$4,000 competitive scholarship opportunity, with scholarship amounts dependent on the length/course credit of the program. The application for the following calendar year usually opens in September in the GO Application system on the USM Foundation website.
Applicants are chosen based on their GPA, involvement, leadership, essay responses, recommendations, and overall compelling reasons as to why they want to study abroad.
The Luckyday Scholars Program has events throughout the year planned by various committees.
Scholars may participate on leadership teams such as our Advisory Board, Mentors, and event committees.
