Join us for the annual Center for the Study of the Gulf South Showcase, a day of engaging discussions and scholarship focused on the Gulf South.
This year's event features presentations by Dr. Laura Mammina (Assistant Professor of History at Southern Miss), Julia Speed (2022 Harrison County Teacher of the Year, Southern Miss Alumna), and William Browning (M.A. Candidate in History, 2025 Baird Fellow), each offering unique insights into the region’s history, education, and journalism.

William Browning, Master's Candidate, History (Advisor: Kevin Green), will present
lecture titled "'Let There Be One': Uncovering P.D. East and The Petal Paper."
Meet our Baird Fellow
A first-year master’s student in the History department, Browning's research focuses on Mississippi politics and journalism during the Civil Rights era.
He is a journalist by trade, and has written for Smithsonian Magazine, Rolling Stone, The Oxford American, The New Republic, Columbia Journalism Review and other regional and national publications.
The Baird Fellow is a graduate student in History who has been awarded funds from the Center to conduct research that will help them complete their master's thesis or Ph.D. Dissertation.
