An important part of the University of Southern Mississippi Police Department is the Communications Division. They are responsible for handling all telephone and radio traffic for the department.
In the event of an emergency, you should dial 911 from any of The University of Southern Mississippi’s campuses or facilities. Callers should remain on the line to ensure dispatchers have the correct location. The University Police Department also has available the Telecommunication Device for the Deaf (TDD) emergency call service.
UPD Communications has state of the art dispatch equipment. Such equipment includes the Enhanced 911 System (E-911) which gives the location of the caller using GPS technology as well as caller ID in case the call is prematurely disconnected.
Another important piece of equipment is the National Crime Information Center (N.C.I.C.) computer. This provides officers with a wide array of information through obtaining driver's license checks, license plate checks and provides the ability to check for warrants on fugitives. It also gives the detectives the ability to perform background checks and assists them in investigations.
However, the most important piece of equipment we rely on is the radio. Our communications cover all USM campuses including those on the Gulf Coast and provide the officers and admin personnel with the ability to disseminate information quickly and accurately. This is also the officer's lifeline making the relationship between the officer and the communications officer crucial.
In order to be employed as a Communications Officer one must be able to pass a background check and oral interview. In addition, certification as a tele-communicator is highly valued. Those without such certification will be required to attain that certification within one year.
