Examity FAQs for Students

Southern Miss is partnering with Examity® to assist you in your proctoring needs for your online classes. This provides another option for distance students who can’t meet at a proctoring center. Each student will schedule the appointment and meet with a proctor through the Examity link in your Canvas course.

Best Practices for Students

  • Don’t wait until the last hour to schedule your exam. The Internet is busy during testing time.
    • The sooner you schedule your appointment the better your experience will be.
  • Be conscious of who is using the Internet as you are taking your test.
    • The more people accessing the wireless system will make a slower Internet connection. Ask anyone sharing your space to refrain from using the Internet until you have completed your exam.
  • If possible, plug your computer into the hard-wire connection.
  • Access your Examity® Dashboard and check you computer setup the day before and within 15 to 20 minutes of your exam.
    • Have a back up plan should your Internet be too slow.
      • If a your Internet is too slow, and you do not have a backup plan, Reschedule or Cancel your appointment.
    • You will meet your proctor or access the automated system through your Examity® Dashboard of your Canvas course.
    • Take your test in a quiet room, alone, without possibility of disruption.
      • Examity will require you to be alone in a room, desk cleared with no phone.
      • Have your Id ready.
      • NEVER take a test using the Canvas App, phone, or tablet.
      • Once you click to access your Examity Dashboard, do not open another browser. Attempting to access Canvas through a browser, using another device, or using the Canvas App will cause your Examity Dashboard to become inactive. You'll be marked as "No Show". "No Show" is non-refundable.

Examity® FAQ for Students

Examity® can be found in one of the Modules within your course.

  • Click Modules on the course menu.
  • Click the Examity® Dashboard link

Examity® system requirements are:

  • Desktop computer or laptop (tablets, Chromebook and cell phones do not meet our requirements)
  • A working built-in or external webcam and microphone
  • Internet speed must be at least 2 Mbps download and 2 Mbps upload. Hot spots are not recommended. Test internet speed at: http://www.speedtest.net
  • Chrome browser with pop-up blocker disabled.

The proctoring fee is determined by the duration the instructor has set for the exam.

  • $18.00 for the first hour and $10.00 for each additional hour set in the test.
  • Students are charged a $5.00 late fee if scheduled within 24 hours of the exam opening date.
  • Mississippi charges 7% sales tax on the service.
  • Click to access the Examity® link in your course.
    • Be sure your time zone and profile are setup.
  • Click to schedule your exam.
    • Select the instructor, course, and test.
  • Click the "Off" button on the right of "On-demand scheduling" to switch it "On".

Note: You will not find an appointment slot within 30 minutes of the Available Until time, plus the duration of the test. In other words, the duration is the amount of time you have to take the test. The date and time the test closes is the Available Until.

Example: If your instructor gives 60 minutes  (the duration) to take the test, you will not find an appointment slot 90 minutes prior to the Available Until.

No, there will be no appointment time slots 30 minutes plus the duration time allowed, prior to the date and time the test is to close.

In other words, the duration is the amount of time you have to take the test. The date and time the test closes is the Available Until.

Example: If your instructor gives 60 minutes (the duration) to take the test, you will not find an appointment slot 90 minutes prior to the Available Until.

There are several possibilities that could cause the error message.

  • Make sure to use Chrome as your internet browser. Safari and IE have added high security measures, which prevent the secure Examity® Dashboard from opening.

It is always a good idea to run the system check on your computer, when you make your appointment to give yourself time to make fixes or cancel. Run another check just before the appointment.

  • Access the Examity® through your course link before your appointment.
    • Best practices is 15 minutes prior.
  • You will meet your proctor through the Examity® Dashboard
    • Click Start Exam

Yes, you will have problems, if your name on your Id is different from the name on  the id you uploaded at the time you setup your profile.

Best Practice:

  • As soon as your name change is official, complete this form to have your name changed in SOAR, which will change it in Canvas.
  • Upload a new image of your Id with the correct name.

Accessing Examity® early allows you to run the computer check to make sure the Internet speed is ample to complete the exam while being proctored.

If you find your Internet speed is less than required in your current location:

  • Move to a different location and check your Internet speed again.
  • Ask others to refrain using the Internet during your test.
  • Reschedule the appointment
