The University of Southern Mississippi (USM) Office of Leadership and Student Involvement
(LSI) recently held a Presidents Kickoff Luncheon for its 150 student organization
presidents as part of a new series of events designed to celebrate and encourage student
leaders on campus, following two years of restrictions on student activities due to
the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We wanted to create an event for student leaders to just come and interact with other
organization presidents whom they might not have ever met before, and to feel empowered
and celebrated at the start of the year,” said LSI Director Dr. Emily Holmes.
Dean of Students and Association Vice President for Student Affairs Sirena Cantrell
gave opening remarks, thanking organization presidents for leading and being committed
to student success through engagement on campus. Presidents were treated to an exclusive
swag bag of items and were seated at tables pre-assigned to encourage them to get
to know others they might not normally interact with, designed by LSI graduate assistant
Halle Johnson.
Holmes hopes to continue events like this in the future, as they encourage student
leaders through interactions with others and in strengthening their commitment to
creating belonging and connection for all Southern Miss students through student organization
involvement.
The Office of Leadership and Student Involvement oversees registered student organizations
and houses the Student Government Association (SGA) and the Southern Miss Activities
Council campus programming board (SMAC). As a member of the Division of Student Affairs,
they are committed to developing healthy, connected, and learning-focused students
and communities. For more information, visit www.usm.edu/lsi.
